 X Marks The Spot - Monday, September 04, 2006 at 9:14 AM
Lately, my weapon of choice to combat boredom has been comics. Cliched guy thing as it can be, i haven't picked up the habit until last year. But when i did, i was hooked man.

And what better comics are there than the X-men one's out there? Ok, maybe there are fans of the Dark Knight, Superman and maybe even Spidey out there furiously protesting with me, but face it, X-men, as childish as I'm going to sound: roxxorz. Even DC embraced the concept of a whole organisation of superheroes banding together, hence the Justice League.

As i said, i wasn't a comic fan until mid-late last year. But wen i was young, i was very intrigued with the cartoons of such superheroes. Spiderman, Batman, X-men... every Saturday morning never fail, i'll be up and about in the morning to catch it. Still remember i even had a small tape collection on a season of x-men... ahh... those were the days.

It was only years after, when i was in primary 6, i decided to purchase my first comic, just to satisfy my curiosity of how pictures and words will match up to the small screen. An issue of Cable, and i was rather unimpressed, just because i was extremely lost. Plus, it took me 15 minutes to devour the issue, something really not worth it considering i was getting 50 cents a day during my primary school days. That meant i had to live on bread and water for more than a week for that 15 minutes of pleasure. I abandoned the idea of comic books and stuck to TV.

Hanging out with Gao and Guang can be a good thing at times. Some time last year, i picked up 1602 which was strongly reccomanded by guang. Hooked man, i tell you. Hooked.

Comics are still painful on the wallet, costing 30 to 40 bucks for a compiled series of 12 issues or so. Ahh... and there's where bittorrent comes in. Unethical, but my argument is... ermm... actually there's no argument.

Comic-reading have always been labelled as a given attribute of guys. Not that girls don;t read 'em, but most of 'em just don't understand how a atory of a bunch of muscled, underwear-donning men and scantily-clad women saving the world from pending doom can intrigue guys so much.

The hints of hero-ism imbued within us guys, I believe it to be something which God did when he made Adam. As every girl has the desire to look/feel beautiful, every guy has the desire to be the hero. No? Maybe i'm just weird, but don't you picture yourself sometimes as the hero saving the world sometimes? When Cyclops killed off Pheonix, don't you feel his pain and dilenma? Or the sense of pride and courage with a touch of romance when Gambit kamikaze-ed Khan who killed Rogue? If you tell me you can't identify with all these... 3 words for you: you weird freak.

A good comic and my La-Z Boy, the simple recipe to happiness nowadays. It's bad, but i do enjoy an occasional indulgence in escapism.
