We, the pple of Singapore..... - Thursday, August 04, 2005 at 12:39 PM |
A couple of days back, on another slow and hot afternoon, i was surfing through cable tv channels in search of a good afternoon show. MTV, E! Entertainment, Channel 5.... wait, what's this? Hmmm.... the new MTV for the NDP theme song, "Reach out for the skies"
Just like every year, Singapore will pick it's "hottest" star of the year, and for this year, it happened to be none other than, surprise surprise, Taufik and Ruin Rui 'En. So the Mtv basically is about these 2 singers(?) dancing about in different parts of Singapore, with school kids, office go-ers etc., not forgetting the multiple wardrobe changes.
Anyway, cutting to the chase, my 2 cents worth:
I still think Taufik can sing for nuts. Ok, maybe he's not that bad, bad it's just his wannabe style that puts me off. So he dresses like Usher, but can he sing and dance like him? Ahhh... before you die-hard Taufik fans answer my question, take a lis... heck, i'll answer it for you. NO! Ok, given the guy won Singapore Idol, he's got to be not that bad right? I mean, take a look at his competition. Sylvester Sim? Have you heard his rendition of Bon Jovi's It's My Life? Quite.... pitiful, really. And to quote Glenn Ong, he's just another chao ah beng. Olinda Cho? Ok la, must admit she sings quite well, but you must be kidding me... look at what she reduced herself to... Slimming ads. Slimming ads are for aging old actresses who want to revive wat's left of their careers and to put food on the table, not for some fat thunder-thighed singer who's hungry for some attention. Who needs that slimming centre anyway? The advertisement itself made me lose my appetite for a couple of days. Me and 100,000 other guys in Singapore.
And the song itself... reach out for the skies? Huh? Unless it's a message to the people, for us to stop slacking and do something to boost our economy, then i dun really understand the song. Give me "Home" anytime. We should use that song again, not because it is that good, but this year's song is that bad. Just take a look at the Mtv, the song isn't for national day 2005... it's for the careers of 2 singers!
Where's Kit Chan when you need her? -
